About Matresence

Matresence is a word used in anthropology to describe the process of becoming a mother — a transformation as profound as adolescence.

This project exists because that transformation is poorly understood, culturally minimised, and routinely rushed.

Matresence is not a brand platform, a service, or a lifestyle site.
It is an editorial and thinking space.

Here, motherhood is treated as a structural change — not a detour from real life, but a reconfiguration of it.

The editor

Matresence is edited by Kel McIntosh, principal digital advisor, graphic artist, photographer, motorcyclist, mother.

Kel works across design, digital strategy, and cultural analysis.
Her work focuses on how systems shape identity, and how people adapt when those systems fail to account for real human experience.

Matresence is not an extension of professional work.
It is a parallel practice.

Kel started Matresence because when finally was able to stay pregnant at 38, the world of pregnancy shook the absolute core of her identity. With a history of disordered eating, Kel struggled with the rapid physical changes in her body, nausea and hormones, even getting dressed in the morning. Through Matresence, Kel seeks to understand why and how she could help others going through the same experience.

I hope that if you have found Matresence, we are able to give you what you need, where you are now. - Kel McIntosh

Kel lives in the beautiful Hunter Valley with her husband and kiddo. Her favourite things are coffee, fresh bread with butter, libraries and motorcycles.

Please, a note: In our Journal, I write from my own perspective as a person who identifies as a woman. I am also aware of the privilege and opportunities I experience based on my country of residence, income and education. I write what I know and respect that others have different experiences.

You are an amazing mother
